Experience Required:

  • This position requires a Bachelor's Degree in engineering, scientific, business or technical discipline or military operational experience at the E5 level or higher. 
  • 10+ years of general operational experience in systems engineering for DoD weapon systems programs, OR 10 years' combination US Navy, civil service, or industry experience. 
  • Two (2) years of qualified experience in supporting routine systems engineering tasks in system safety including hazard analysis, probability and severity assessments, design and architecture analysis and the generation of system safety reports / documentation. 
  • Demonstrated experience in the development and coordination of presentations to support the Weapon System Explosives Safety Review Board and its Technical Panels, Laser Safety Review Board, and the Department of Defense and the Department of Navy Insensitive Munitions Reviews is also required. 
  • Experience with Microsoft Office Suite applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and Access) is required. 
  • Must be able to articulate complex technical issues in a clear, concise, understandable manner in verbal and written formats.

Description of Duties:

  • The Systems Safety Engineer (SSE) will perform scientific analyses and risk assessments and generate technical data packages in support of NSWC Dahlgren's Lead Naval Technical Laboratory program. 
  • The scope of the Safety Program includes systems safety engineering and hazard analysis, support for laser safety classes and the laboratory supporting Laser Hazard Evaluations (LHE). 
  • Day to day engineering support or tasking will include performing scientific analyses, risk assessments, and generating technical data packages. 
  • Prepare and/or edit reports appropriate for submission to the Laser Safety Review Board LSRB) based on laser safety parameters gathered from laser hazard evaluations.
  • Efforts may involve engineering change reviews, hazard analysis, mishap risk analysis, developing or identifying system safety design requirements for hazard mitigation, hazard record entry and maintenance in the Hazard Tracking System, coordination of system safety efforts with interfacing activities such as Test and Evaluation, performing data collection and recording of system safety documents. 
  • This position will be required to obtain and maintain a Laser Safety Specialist certification and to provide instruction for laser safety courses such as Administrative Laser Safety Officer (ALSO), Technical Laser Safety Officer (TLSO), Range Laser Safety Specialist (RLSS), and Laser Safety Specialist (LSS).

Travel: Local (within the continental US) travel may be required.
